Assess / Analyze / Acknowledge
I began this project at a pinnacle moment within the app’s history of design iterations. I was entering the project in the middle of round two. As I on-boarded and acclimated to the environment and team dynamics, I turned on multiple layers of logic within my process to compare with existing methods that I was inheriting. I took a user-centric approach, with the user being the base foundation layer, overlaid by social, community and business logic layers. Within those overlays were layers for commerce, privacy and other social engagement processes. All encapsulated within the genre of travel.
I assessed the logic and direction of the design and redesign of the existing application to understand strengths, vulnerabilities and limitations of the existing direction. I took feedback and understanding from Product, DevOps, QA, Marketing and Business to conclude that more user engagement was necessary for ROI.
Achieving the balance of a smoother and more intuitive user-centric design would lead to more users, retention and use of the app and supporting a future channel for marketing business and community. The existing model of the app was perceived more as a tool for traveling or managing trips.
2nd Iteration Redesign
Action / Address
How can we convert this app from a tool that is primarily used when a user is on trips, to a social platform that is about trips, with content driven by trips, travel experiences and engagements? I acknowledged that there were barriers within the existing UI that prevented engagement and growth. Specific actions were needed if we were to take a user-centric stance.
We needed to address the navigation and overall UI on the front-end. Not as much was needed on the backend, other than new functionality such as messaging, privacy settings and other enhancements. The load was primarily on the front-end and innovative design to accelerate the process to develop a working product.
A strong profile process was needed in order to create a balanced user-centric community.
There were dark background colors with low contrast areas, large blocks of gradients and color, which were competing with colors that defined process and actions, making it difficult to distinguish a hierarchy of process over content.
The existing profile process was more of a dashboard approach and required two steps in order to reach the Profile screen. Important user profile engagements were broken up into multiple screens, with no cohesive process or navigation system to engage throughout the app.
3rd Generation Design
Accelerate / Achieve
Two angles from which the profile system derived were how one sees themselves vs. how one is seen within the app. After mind-mapping the existing application and the new approach, I found a way within the UI that allowed a mirrored process from how one sees themselves to how one is seen. The only variables inherently were privacy features, info which one sees and shares about themselves and editable features for their content and information. I created a series of layers for those processes within my new design. This allowed the back-end to utilize the existing infrastructure with minor adjustments, and low impact on the front-end to restructure the existing UI without having to re-architect the system.
I provided low fidelity and high-fidelity conceptual designs with a cleaner, more exciting and visually rich UI that allows users to engage and share with each other while traveling. The business team immediately signed off on moving forward with the new design effort. I started resurfacing the existing screens with the new look and handed off to DevOps. They converted to existing design to the new app UI.
QA provided super positive usability results that showed the effort was needed and accepted well by existing users and those in the wild. The new design approach was adopted by the team and we accelerated our effort to achieve our goal to overhaul the app before the travel season began. Our goal was achieved and the foundation of the app went live on production.
